Welcome to High Down Infant and Nursery School.

On behalf of the children, staff and governors we would like to warmly welcome you to High Down Infant School.

We are a large infant school that has managed to create the feel of a small, nurturing and friendly community. We have lovely school grounds for the children to use. There are two playgrounds and a field for the children to use at break times. The nursery unit has a wonderful outside space to use during work times and the reception classes also have access to their own safe play space

We are a warm, happy, friendly school who provide quality education in a calm caring environment. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, secure and valued and your child’s emotional and social development are extremely important to us. The first years of schooling are hugely important and can positively shape children’s attitude towards life long learning. Our aim is that by the time the children leave us they will have developed a good sense of worth and a stimulated mind so that they are happy and motivated as they continue on their journey through education.

Our broad, balanced curriculum is challenging, creative and fun. It is taught through exciting projects that inspire and stimulate the children, making learning fun! Walking around our school visitors never fail to comment on the exciting ‘buzz’ of our children enjoying their learning. Each child is valued for their own talents, strengths and personality and we encourage the children to succeed and reach their potential, to have high self-esteem and a belief that they can achieve.

We have a dedicated, highly professional and experienced team of staff who work closely together to provide the best for our children. Quality teaching and high expectations ensures our children’s attainment in maths, reading and writing is consistently well above North Somerset and National results. Standards are high academically, socially and behaviourally and these aspects were all noted in our ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED report. We hold a number of prestigious awards for our work across the curriculum including: The International School Award, Eco School Award, Gold travel plan award, e-safety mark.

We have strong links with High Down Junior School and ensure that transitions from Y2 to Y3 are as smooth as possible with the child's individual needs and interests taken into consideration.

We firmly believe in partnership with parents and greatly value the support you provide. Caring staff and strong parent partnerships ensure that children’s behaviour and attitudes to learning are excellent. Good relationships between pupils, staff, parents and careers are of paramount importance to us. Our annual parents’ questionnaire clearly states our strengths and demonstrates how parents value the school’s support of individual children.

“Fantastic teachers. The teachers not only do an amazing job, they genuinely care for each child.”

“Our daughter is unhappy when it is not a school day! She has done nothing but feel great about it and the amount of progress she has made as a result of that and her ‘fantastic’ teacher (her words) is just brilliant.”

“Very good communication between teachers and parents. I feel informed about his learning and how he is socially. It is a very welcoming atmosphere where you feel at ease to talk to the teachers about any concerns/issues.”

“Wonderful nurturing and caring environment. Lovely and safe – a fantastic start to school life.”

“The school manages to achieve a small school feel in a large infant school. The teachers and Head seem to know all the children!”

“High Down Infant and Nursery school has such a great reputation and it’s easy to see why. You get lots of information about what’s happening at the school and it’s all in good time. The teaching in both the nursery and the infants is excellent and I find all the staff really friendly and welcoming.”

“I think the school is doing an outstanding job. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my child. He loves school, loves learning and loves his teacher. Fantastic grounding for his academic life.”

“My child has been happy to go to school every day!”

“Teaching staff are utterly fantastic! Supportive and caring and yet challenging and encouraging them to improve and grow.”

“The children at High Down Infant School are treated as individuals and are taught in a way that suits them as such. The leaders of the school take the time to know the children well and ensure that their academic (and other) needs are met.”

“The information given to parents to help their children learn is fantastic. Most parents (I would assume) need some guidance to know what/how we can help with our children’s learning and it’s second to none in the infants.”
